It is hard to mark out the boundaries of superstition. A
Frenchman travelling in Italy finds almost everything
superstitious, and is hardly wrong. The archbishop of
Canterbury claims that the archbishop of Paris is super-
stitious the Presbyterians levy the same reproach against
his Grace of Canterbury, and are in their turn called
superstitious by the Quakers, who are the most super-
stitious of men in the eyes of other Christians.
Voltaire Philosophical Dictionary
Superstitions are beliefs and practices that are subjective and supported by rationale that lack complete objectivity. Ignorance and fear dominates the minds of those who try to use superstition as a tool to protect themselves from what they believe is ‘unknown’.
Just like our culture and tradition has been passed on to us from generation to generation, superstitions have also been neatly packed and transported to us within this gift hamper. Look at the cursed number 13, there are a number of stories behind why the double-digit 13 became infamous. The story I heard among the other ridiculous ones, claims that the cursed number 13 came into being thanks to our ancient Egyptian and Chinese counterparts. The members of ancient Egypt and Chinese civilizations are believed to have used their ten fingers and two feet to count which made the number 12 the highest numerical number they could count up to. Since the number 13 came immediately after 12 they started to think of it as an evil number as it was unknown to their clan! But then going by their logic shouldn’t every number after 12 be cursed?Ignorance of such sort was acceptable during the time of ancient civilizations but how does one explain civilized 20thcentury people running from the number 13?! Architects till date omit the 13th floor from buildings they build.
Imagine the directors and producers of Apollo 13 and Oceans Thirteen, they must really have B**** of steel! or may be the cursed numerics are responsible for the $334,100,000(Apollo 13) and $311,144,465 (Oceans Thirteen) box office collections of the two movies. Imagine their plight! They must be devastated!!!!

Superstitions sprouted for some reason, though they have different stories underlying them. I guess the reason we would like to believe in them is so that we don't have to be a victim to the not so good luck we would have to face in case of opposing the norms . A few weeks ago a crow flew into our home. As much as we wanted it out, the crow too wanted to get out. Since a crow is not considered good luck, we had to go to the temple, and make some offerings just so that we don't have to face any kind of bad luck. I did it maybe because I didn’t want anything to happen, as against not visiting the temple and wait for something to happen.
ReplyDeleteGood One. Nice touch there with those movie stats.
ReplyDeleteIt is said that religion is the body of unproven science. One could easily refer to superstitions in the same light. However, it is hard to see how superstitions will die out or come undone one day...because none of us want to be the first one to prove them to be wrong!
ReplyDeleteEnlightening.... :) its amusing to note that these beliefs are a base to most of our reactions.
ReplyDeleteOur day begins with the belief that we need to get up the right side to have a perfectly smooth day .
ReplyDeleteWe might claim to have progressed in the field of science , technology and medicine ; we might also claim that there is a scientific reasoning for all the phenomenons that occur ; but it is indeed really easy for us to believe in some of the things that don't have a scientific reason backing them up. For us to write off superstitions saying its baseless or impractical to believe in it tends to become difficult because we dont want to be the first one to be proved wrong by not believing in them . For as long as Human minds think like this superstitions will be part of our existence.
Agreed...Education doesn't seem to have helped changing people's thought process either..and I'm a bit ashamed to say that I'm one of them who believes in the Number 13 Superstition as well..For Instance..when my dad wanted me to learn driving, he bought me a car and i was keen on driving it as well, until my friend pointed out that the car was black AND the digits of the number plate added up to 13 !!! I'd like to believe that my inability to drive has nothing to do with it but well..it's jus my mindset and ..convenient to an extent as well !!
ReplyDeleteFascinating and informative!! had heard of some of these notions but didnt know the reasons behind most.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see more detail on this page since its an undying topic and definitely got me curious enough to know more.
wow! what things, and people, exist on this planet!! this was a fun read!
ReplyDeleteInteresting!! for me, not being so much of a person who enjoys reading but this really caught my attention!
ReplyDeletei liked the way you present this stuff in a real humorous manner. Kick ass ending...good one!!
ReplyDeletefrom everything you all have said , it's evident that we all think of superstitions as a -'prevention is better than cure' measure. We indulge in weird superstitious beliefs cause we want to prevent any chance of anything going wrong even if there is no possibility of anything happening...
ReplyDeletea very very interesting read...
ReplyDeleteSuperstions like the cat crossing, unlucky number 13 etc have actually evolved to help people surive with the "prevention is better than cure" approach to life.
ReplyDeleteShort and very enlightening!
Good work!
P.S : I like the Tittle :D
