Touchwood

Touchwood the best possible way to preserve a positive situation, isn’t it? “They said I am good for the job—touchwood”, “he keeps me so happy—touchwood”, “she is so healthy for her age—touchwood”. In theory if we didn’t touchwood in these situations, I would become bad at my job, he wouldn’t keep me happy and she would be unhealthy for her age. Crazy!!! Well!! Hmmmmm...

It is believed that this phrase that we use to sustain good fortune originates out of ancient mythology where trees were said to hold good spirits. What’s also interesting is that if we don’t find wood we go about touching our head and say –“touchwood”, this was apparently done because our brain is equated to a block of wood ( I don’t really know if this supposed to speak highly of us and our intellectually ability!!!)

I for sure would rather believe the ancient myth versus being overly logical about it, so in words of Eddie Floyd—You better knock, knock on wood, baby.

  3. Just realized that i had never questioned why touch wood...do it all the time..now there is some explanation..
Any idea why people say touch gold??

  4. I'm guessing if wood holds the good spirits than gold would probably signify a fortune of luck...

  5. I love the undertone in all your entries! And they are all the perfect length...short enough to be interesting, but long enough to chew on!

"Tiggy touch wood"...I believe this is where this one came from. An version of one of the most popular childhood games..."running and catching"! I believe going back in time in ancient England (this is in the 1800s!) kids used to play a version of 'running and catching' where one was safe from being "tagged" if they "touched wood", I guess in their case this was trees. The phrase probably passed into everyday language from there....interesting huh!

Loving the blog. Can't wait to see more!

  8. Well written.....crisp and to the point... and honestly not sure if "touchwood" works or not but if some superstitions make you believe that you will be happier for longer or that you have a greater probability of being healthier, then why not keep them goin :-)!!!

  10. So true!! Even though I should know better, I do it too - knocking on wood and (rather shamefacedly admitting) touching my head when there isn't wood around :)
    Nice one!

  11. For someone like me who is always telling "touch wood" "touch wood" all the time its great to know why we actually do it . I would have probably googled this sooner or later but would have certainly not got an answer with an undertone of humour :). Loving your blog. Keep it coming :)
